It’s Not Giving Up
There is a child in almost every family who appears far more capable outside the classroom than inside it.
They can repair something nobody else understands, work out how a machine fits together, build, design, cook, code, organise, negotiate or solve a practical problem long before the adults around them have finished discussing it.
Then the report arrives.
Too little effort. Poor concentration. Not reaching potential.
After enough years of hearing it, the child often reaches a simpler conclusion: I am not clever.
We say that children learn differently, then continue measuring almost all of them against the same narrow version of success.
For some learners, this works beautifully.
They manage the subjects, examinations and pace of a traditional academic school route and move towards matric with a growing sense of possibility.
Others spend year after year trying to prove themselves in an environment that mostly records what they find difficult.
The question is not whether these learners are capable. It is whether we have placed them on the right educational road.
Leaving one route is not leaving education
Most parents have absorbed a very particular map of education.
A child stays at school until matric, applies to university or college and then begins preparing for work.
Anything that interrupts that sequence can feel alarming. Leaving the traditional school route before matric sounds dangerously close to leaving education altogether.
They are not the same thing.
South Africa has recognised vocational and occupational pathways through which learners can continue their education differently.
Some combine academic theory with practical learning. Others are structured around a particular occupation, trade or field of work.
This is not the route for every child. It is also not a route parents should dismiss simply because nobody has explained it properly.
Some learners continue towards matric in the familiar way. Others begin working towards a different recognised qualification after Grade 9.
Both are still learning.
Why do we make them wait?
The Grade 9 entry point stopped me during my research.
A learner who has completed Grade 9 may be able to enter an NC(V) programme at Level 2, continue through Levels 3 and 4 and study within a vocational field such as engineering, information technology, hospitality, tourism, business or agriculture.
That means some learners do not have to spend another three years struggling through an academic programme that has already given us considerable evidence that it does not suit them.
Why, then, do we so often insist that they remain?
Why must a learner spend years proving that they cannot thrive in one form of education before we allow them to begin the kind in which they might?
There are sensible reasons to be cautious.
Fifteen is young. Interests change. The quality of colleges and programmes varies.
Transport, cost, maturity and future progression all need careful consideration.
Those are reasons to investigate properly. They are not reasons to pretend the option does not exist.
The pathways are different
The terminology becomes confusing very quickly, particularly when every college website seems to assume that parents already understand the system.
An NC(V), or National Certificate (Vocational), is a vocational education route that can begin after Grade 9.
It includes fundamental subjects alongside theory and practical learning within a chosen vocational area. Learners generally move from Level 2 through Levels 3 and 4.
Occupational qualifications are built around the knowledge and practical competence needed for a particular occupation.
These programmes usually combine structured learning, practical training and workplace experience under the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations.
Artisan pathways prepare learners for trades such as electrical work, plumbing, fitting, welding, mechanics and other technical occupations.
The exact requirements differ by programme, but the route generally includes theory, practical training, workplace experience and, eventually, a trade test.
NATED programmes are another technical route, traditionally organised through N-level study and relevant practical experience.
There are also learnerships, apprenticeships, skills programmes and specialist private qualifications in fields including culinary arts, film, design, technology, beauty, hospitality, aviation and early childhood development.
They should not be bundled together as though they are interchangeable.
Parents need to know exactly what qualification is being offered, who oversees it, where it can lead and whether the provider is properly registered or accredited for that particular programme.
A college name is not enough. The exact qualification matters.
Different work is still hard work
Vocational education is often described as the easier option, usually by people who have never tried to master a trade, complete a practical assessment or perform accurately in a real workplace where mistakes have consequences.
A learner may struggle to memorise content for a written examination and still need considerable technical knowledge, precision, patience and judgement to diagnose a mechanical fault.
A young person who finds conventional classroom learning difficult may be able to follow a complex process, work safely with equipment, solve problems under pressure and produce something to an exact standard.
That is not lesser ability. It is ability being used differently.
These routes still require discipline. There are assessments, deadlines, theory and standards that must be met. Choosing a practical pathway does not remove difficulty.
It gives the difficulty a purpose the learner can understand.
What changed for Josh
Josh had reached the point where school had become less about learning and more about being reminded of what he could not do.
On paper, he could easily have been reduced to another learner who was underperforming. That description missed him almost entirely.
He was practical, curious about how things worked and far more engaged when he could build, repair or solve something tangible. His strengths were visible.
They simply carried very little weight in the environment where he was being assessed.
Once he moved into learning that made use of those strengths, the most important change was not a mark. It was his relationship with himself.
The work still required effort. He had not found an escape from learning. He had found a reason to participate in it.
That is what parents are trying to protect when they begin considering a different route. Not comfort. Not an easier life.
A young person’s belief that they are capable of learning something worthwhile.
What parents need to ask
A different pathway can be exactly right and still be badly chosen.
Before enrolling, parents need clear answers.
- What is the full name of the qualification?
- At what level is it registered? Which body oversees it?
- Does the provider have approval to offer that specific Programme?
- How much of the learning is theoretical, practical and workplace-based?
- Is workplace placement included or must the family arrange it?
- What can the learner do after completing it?
Ask about progression too.
- Can the qualification lead into further study, employment, an apprenticeship or a trade test?
- Are there subjects or minimum marks required at entry?
- Will another institution recognise the qualification later?
Do not settle for, ‘There are many opportunities afterwards.’ Ask them to name the opportunities.
The purpose is not to force every practical learner into a college after Grade 9. It is to replace assumption with proper information.
It is not a smaller ambition
Parents sometimes fear that considering a vocational route means they have stopped believing in their child.
In many cases, the opposite is true.
It takes a great deal of belief to stop chasing the version of success everybody recognises and begin looking seriously at the one that may suit your child.
University remains a valuable route. Matric remains important. Many learners who struggle for a period at school need support rather than a different qualification.
But there are also learners for whom another three years in the same environment will not build resilience, maturity or academic readiness. It will teach them, with increasing force, that they are the problem.
They are not.
A learner who thinks spatially, works practically, sees systems, understands tools, makes things, solves real problems or comes alive through doing has not failed to become intelligent in the approved way.
They have been showing us where their intelligence lives.
The decision to change educational pathways should be informed, careful and specific to the child. It should not be shameful.
Sometimes the most ambitious decision a family can make is to stop asking a child to keep proving what does not work and begin taking seriously what might.
